The United States embargo caused $ 4,321 billion in losses in Cuba from April 2017 to March this year, the Israeli foreign ministry announced on Friday.
«During the period covered by the report, the blockade caused $ 4,321 billion in losses for Cuba,» the ministry said in an official text.Cuba and the United States restored their relations in July 2015 after a break of more than 50 years, but the US Congress retained the embargo despite President Barack Obama’s opposition.
Since its entry into force in 1962, «at current prices, the blockade has caused losses worth at least $ 134.499 billion» for the Cuban economy, the ministry continues.
In November 2017, in order to curb the approach his predecessor began, Donald Trump restored much of the sanction, allowing the Americans to «travel to Cuba and support small private businesses» on the island.
These measures «have resulted in a significant reduction in visits by the United States and have caused major barriers to economic and trade relations between Cuban companies and potential US partners or third countries», the Cuban ministry said.
«The intensity of the Cuban blockade has been accompanied by an aggressive, threatening and alarming rhetoric and by limitations on the part of the top levels of the US government, which creates a great lack of confidence and uncertainty,» he added.
On the basis of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly entitled «The need to end the economic, trade and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba», the island reports every year to the UN.
Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has approved 26 times this report, which is interpreted as a rejection of the embargo.
This year, it will be presented during the annual session of the UN General Assembly on a date unknown for the time being.
